Art & Design

Join our artists & designers all aboard Frida Fields for a journey of Creative and Exploratory journey.

Our curriculum inspires our artists and designers, through a carefully structured and sequential approach to learning. Learners engage in opportunities to develop their practical knowledge, making it possible for them to visually communicate, create their ideas and demonstrate thought. Our artists experience a breadth of theoretical knowledge, learning from the history of art. Proficiency in drawing, painting and sculpture is developed from the Early Years. Carefully sequenced, well planned, purposeful opportunities allow our artists to build on prior learning, making connections and refining their skills as artists. This enables our artists and designers to develop from novice to expert, experiencing the magic through the whole story of art.

Intent

  • We aim to ensure that our learners are able to think, communicate (using their artists pallette of vocabulary) and be expert artists and designers.
  • We seek to develop expert artists & designers who are excited and enthused by an ambitious curriculum which enables them to know more, learn more and remember more. We seek to inspire our learners along their exploratory and creative journey, from novice to expert. Our artists & designers will enhance their subject knowledge by reading and exploring the lives and works of a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers.
  • Together we aim for all of our learners to be explorative and creative artists that are able to think aloud and express their artistic personality. We believe that our little people will build confidence alongside strengthening their artistic skills.
  • Our artists will understand that the elements of art are the key components used to create unique works of art. They will critically evaluate the work of artists using the language of art.
  • We seek to ensure that all learners know that they are unique and are free to express their authenticity as an artist. We use a ‘positive feedback’ approach and give constructive feedback to compliment the art piece in a respectable, professional manner. Together the Park Hall family celebrates authentic artists.

Implementation

Our inspiring and aspirational Art curriculum (based on the National Curriculum) is meticulously planned to identify the knowledge and skills that our artists will acquire. Each small step in our artists journey has been carefully planned to ensure a challenging and progressive curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.

Artists will regularly revisit key concepts (over learning) and engage in regular retrieval practice which builds upon prior knowledge and enables them to make connections to deepen their understanding of new learning, committing this to long term memory.

Artists build knowledge of media and techniques to make purposeful choices, applying knowledge to achieve desired effects. Proficiency in art is developed through a combination of skill development, experimentation and exploration which allows artists to develop as competent and confident artists.

Our art journey is centred around the growth of the artist and developing the skills to self assess, self analyse and to direct their artistic journey. Conversations between artists develop their ability to reflect on their own growth and to support their authenticity as an artist.

Our artists experiment with different art mediums, techniques and styles in order to be creative and to develop as authentic artists. They explore a range of art forms, including traditional and contemporary practices from different cultures, historical periods and artistic movements. This allows them to take creative risks and inspiration whilst developing their own artwork.

Artists will become proficient in our chosen specialisms of drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and digital media, mastering techniques to develop as confident artists. They build their skills and expertise through a progressively challenging and creatively demanding curriculum that builds on prior learning and supports artists in isolating and refining their skills within specialisms.

Learners use their ‘Artist Palette of Vocabulary’ to communicate like an artist, using technical vocabulary when describing and using the seven elements of art (line, shape, space, value, colour, form and texture). Artists are continually developing their component knowledge through

  • practical (how we make art)
  • theoretical (knowledge of art and it’s cultural history)
  • disciplinary (knowledge of how quality and value have been expressed by experts).

Our creative learners immerse themselves in the work, lives and impact of inspiring artists, designers and craft makers to explore their contributions in the context of historical and cultural development. This entails recognising how their work reflects and influences artistic movements and technological advancements for example digital media.
