At Park Hall Academy, we inspire a love of geography learning and create expert geographers of the future.

  • We aim to ensure that our learners are able to think, communicate (using their geographers World of Words) and be expert geographers.
  • We seek to develop expert geographers who are excited and enthused by an ambitious curriculum which enables them to know more, learn more and remember more. We seek to inspire our geographers along their exploratory journey to becoming expert geographers. Our geographers will enhance their subject knowledge, by reading and exploring a range of geographical texts, reading to learn across the curriculum. We have the highest expectations of ALL learners and All access the full curriculum offer.
  • Together we aim for all geographers to engage in a high- quality geography education that inspires curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We aim for our geographers to engage in enquiry and investigative learning to discover how they, as geographers, affect the world and have the ability to change it as active global citizens.
  • We seek to secure an understanding of the concepts of space, place, scale, environment, interconnection, sustainability and change, which are integral to a geographers understanding. We consider space, place and scale to be our three big ideas, which form the fundamental principles of geography teaching at Park Hall Academy.

Implementation

Our inspiring and aspirational Geography curriculum (based on the National Curriculum) is meticulously planned to identify the knowledge and skills that our geographers will aquire. Each small step in our geographers journey has been carefully planned to ensure a challenging and progressive curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.

Geographers will regularly revisit key concepts (over learning) and engage in regular retrieval practice which builds upon prior knowledge and enables them to make connections to deepen their understanding of new learning, committing this to long term memory.

Where is where? Our geographers develop a secure locational knowledge through the use of atlases, globes and a variety of maps, which empowers all learners to understand the world around them. Geographers master their ability to read and use maps with automaticity which enables them to identify specific locations across the globe and their position in relation to each other as they navigate their way around the world.

Geographers will enquire, investigate and explore diverse places worldwide, understanding their significance and features, similarities and differences in order to make sense of the world in which they live.

Through questioning, investigation and discussion, geographers develop a well rounded understanding of places, encompassing both physical and human aspects. Geographers make explicit connections, comparing similarities and differences, understanding that people and places are interconnected. Geographers apply their knowledge in real world contexts, developing their map skills and cultural awareness of places studied.

Geographers understand both human and physical processes, developing the knowledge of scale and fostering global citizenship. It equips learners with locational knowledge, empowering them to comprehend the world’s complexities, fostering critical thinking and a sense of responsibility.

Students explore diverse places worldwide, appreciating the significance and unique features of each. Through enquiry and exploration, they develop a deep understanding of human activities, such as settlement patterns and economic activities, alongside physical processes like erosion and weather patterns. Geographers develop a deeper understanding of the interconnected nature of the world and their place within it, demonstrating secure understanding of human actions and the impact upon the environment (deforestation).

Geographers develop their proficiency (map reading skills, data collection, co-ordinates) and fluency in geographical skills,

engaging in purposeful fieldwork, collecting, analysing and interpreting a range of geographical data. Through engagement of an enquiry led question, geographers deepen their understanding of geographical processes.

Geographers develop their substantive knowledge which supports the learning of disciplinary knowledge and the acquisition of further knowledge.

Impact

Geographers are fascinated by the world in which they live. Our global citizens are informed, empathetic and responsible geographers in an ever-changing world. They are able to enhance their geographical knowledge and skills as they develop fluency and proficiency. Geographers understand that places and people are interconnected and that no place has a “single story”. They know “Where is Where” and can locate and discuss places in relation to other places across the globe. Geographers understand that both physical and human features influence the diverse range of places in our wonderful world.
