History

Join our ‘historians’ all aboard Florence Way for a journey back in time – from novice to expert.

At Park Hall Academy we intend to immerse our learners in a carefully-planned, historically rich, balanced curriculum, which challenges all learners to build upon prior learning and ensures progression. Our young historians will use newly acquired skills to fill in the gaps, infer and imagine how life might have been in the past. Through travelling back in time, we will ignite a passion in our learners to develop a sense of identity, a cultural understanding and sense of heritage. Learenrs will use this evidence to imaginatively reconstruct the past. At Park Hall we are making history every day, on our very own learning journey from Nursery to Year 6.

Intent

  • We aim to ensure that our learners are able to think, communicate (using their historians Vault of Vocabulary) and be expert historians.
  • We seek to develop expert historians who are excited and enthused by an ambitious curriculum which enables them to know more, learn more and remember more. We seek to inspire our historians along their exploratory journey back in time, from novice to expert historians. Our historians will enhance their subject knowledge by reading and exploring a range of historical texts, reading to learn across the curriculum.
  • All members of the Park Hall family aim for our Historians to apply the key skills of historical enquiry to approach the study of the past. Our historians will question sources and perspectives, and understand how historians construct accounts about the past.
  • Through our bespoke, progressively challenging and historically balanced curriculum, we aim to immerse children within history and inspire their curiosity to know more about the past.
  • We aim to develop our historians conceptual understanding by securing a deep and connected knowledge of historical concepts. Our historians will explore connections, make comparisons and question how their learning is similar and different to prior learning. Historians will develop an increasingly complex and rich understanding of substantive and disciplinary knowledge.
  • We aim for our historians to be curious, critical thinkers who ask questions, make connections and develop and apply the key skills of historical enquiry to make discoveries about the past.

Implementation

Our inspiring and aspirational History curriculum (based on the National Curriculum) is meticulously planned to identify the knowledge and skills that our historians will acquire. Each small step in our historians journey has been carefully planned to ensure a challenging and progressive curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.

Historians will regularly revisit key concepts (over learning) and engage in regular retrieval practice which builds upon prior knowledge and enables them to make connections to deepen their understanding of new learning, committing this to long term memory.

Historians will establish a progressively deepened understanding of chronology, developing a secure mental timeline which supports their understanding of history from the earliest times to the present day.

Historians will construct a coherent historical narrative, providing them with a clear structure in which they are able to make connections and commit learning to their long term memory. Through continued development of their chronological understanding, historians develop a sense of advancements and challenges faced by different historical periods.

Historians will learn how significant events and people have influenced our past and shaped our future. Historians develop their knowledge and understanding of local, national and international history by describing and analysing the main events, people and periods studied, and by identifying where these fit within a chronological framework.

Carefully planned enquiry questions, historians develop and apply the key skills of historical enquiry (examining how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, question how and why contrasting interpretations of the past have been constructed, consider the perspective and validity of sources). Our historians will ask perceptive questions, develop critical thinking and examine a range of primary and secondary sources. Meaningful and purposeful use of primary and secondary sources of evidence will enable our historians to construct accurate representations of the past.

Our coherent, progressive curriculum ensures that historians are able to revisit and gain a secure understanding of abstract terms (e.g. empire, civilisation) and concepts (e.g. continuity & change). Historians will make connections, ask questions and create their own structured accounts through carefully planned opportunities to revisit abstract terms and concepts within a range of historical contexts and across different time periods throughout history.

Impact

Our curious historians will make discoveries about the past. They will know and understand how historians learn and construct arguments about the past and they will demonstrate and apply these skills to approach the study of the past. Historians will have a secure understanding of key events and people in history and they will know how key concepts are interconnected and enable us to deepen their understanding. Historians will demonstrate their increasingly complex knowledge and skills as they think, communicate and be historians.
